Mynor Romeo Alvarado-Canahui, age 35, of Norwalk, will spend 25 years in prison and register as a sex offender when he's released as part of his plea deal, the State's Attorney said.
Prosecutors told the court that Alvarado-Canahui intentionally crashed his car into a 20-year-old woman as she walked along a remote back country road in New Canaan around 4 p.m. on May 25, 2020, the State's Attorney said.
The impact threw the woman on the hood with her head smashing the windshield. She broke vertebrae, fractured her skull, and sustained permanent hearing loss in one ear from the attack, the prosecutor said.
Alvarado-Canahui tried to drag her into his vehicle, but she screamed and bit him when he covered her mouth. He yanked her down an embankment to the Silvermine River, where he shoved her head under the water and held her down, authorities said.
A family on their way home from a walk heard the splashing. When they asked what was happening, Alvarado-Canahui stammered and stuttered before running away with condoms falling out of his pocket as he clambered back up the embankment, authorities said.
The woman was able to get help from the family.
Police rushed to the scene and arrested Alvarado-Canahui. They found several internet searches on his phone which involved rape and kidnapping fantasies, the prosecutor said.
He later told investigators that he did not know the woman and had chosen her randomly.
Alvarado-Canahui pleaded guilty to:
- Attempted murder
- Kidnapping in the first-degree
- Assault in the first-degree
- Attempt to commit sexual assault in the first-degree
A sentencing hearing for Alvarado-Canahui is set for Feb. 13, 2025.
